“Where is the morality?”: President Anote Tong’s call at the Oceania Regional Dialogue

The Pacific Elders’ Voice co-convened the Oceania Regional Dialogue of the Global Ethical Stocktake held in Sydney on Monday, September 15. These regional dialogues mobilize ethical commitment in the lead up to COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

President Anote Tong, co-leader of the Oceania Regional Dialogue alongside the Brazilian COP30 Presidency, made urgent calls to fulfil the goals set out in the Paris Agreement, drawing attention to the destruction that fossil fuels continue to cause for island nations. “The issue of fossil fuels remains under debate. Meanwhile, we struggle, people suffer from the impact of storms, our islands are deeply affected by climate change,” he noted. “How can we face these challenges while others engage in activities that destroy the planet? Where is the morality? It is vital that these issues are highlighted, and this dialogue helps make that possible.”

Participants ranged from political leaders, civil society representatives, Indigenous voices, climate policy experts, activists and artists from across Oceania. These diverse perspectives strengthen calls for moral and ethical responsibility to address climate change, moving beyond existing technical solutions to strengthen genuine commitment and action to implement them.
